Twill Weave Carbon Fiber Fabric - 2x2 Diagonal Architecture
Twill weave is a woven carbon fiber architecture in which each warp tow passes over two weft tows and under two, producing the distinctive diagonal rib pattern that has become the visual signature of premium carbon fiber parts. Compared with plain weave, the 2x2 interlace has fewer crossover points, which gives the cloth noticeably better drapability while retaining good dimensional stability.
The practical consequence is that twill cloth conforms more easily to gentle and moderate curves without wrinkling or bridging, yet still handles cleanly on the layup table. This balance - drapability plus stability plus appearance - is why twill is the default choice when the carbon surface will be seen, and why it dominates automotive interior trim, visible body panels, consumer sporting goods and premium enclosures. The underlying fiber is the GX400 wet-spun series: tensile strength ≥4,000 MPa, tensile modulus ≥230 GPa, elongation ≥1.5%, density 1.77 +/- 0.03 g/cm3, with epoxy-compatible sizing of 1.0-1.6%. Widths up to 2,200 mm are available for wide-format panels. See how the cloth is produced in how carbon fiber cloth is made.

Quality and Certifications
Twill cloth is produced under a quality system certified to ISO 9001, AS9100D (aerospace), IATF 16949 (automotive), ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, with CNAS-accredited laboratory testing. Areal weight is held to tight tolerance (for example 200 +/- 10 g/m2), and fiber straightness is protected by individual tension meters per tow during heddle threading, with warp breakage limited to no more than 5 broken filaments per 100 m of fabric surface.
Cloth is supplied sealed against moisture and shock, stored at 10-35 C with relative humidity below 70%, and carries a 24-month shelf life.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between twill and plain weave carbon fiber?
Twill uses a 2x2 interlace with fewer crossover points, giving better drapability and a diagonal appearance. Plain weave uses a 1x1 interlace with maximum crossover frequency, giving the highest stability but the least drape. Choose twill for curved or visible parts; choose plain for flat panels.
Is 3K or 12K twill better for visible parts?
3K twill is the classic cosmetic weave - the fine tow produces a refined, even diagonal pattern. 12K twill uses larger tows, giving a bolder texture and lower cost per square metre, and is chosen when the cloth is structural or partially visible.
Can twill cloth be used with vacuum infusion?
Yes. GX400 wet-spun fiber has excellent resin wettability, and the epoxy-compatible sizing (1.0-1.6%) is well matched to infusion and prepreg processes.
What widths are available?
Standard weaving widths run from 600 mm to 2,200 mm depending on tow size and areal weight. Non-standard widths can be produced to order.
