Plain Weave Carbon Fiber Fabric - 1x1 Balanced Architecture

Plain weave is the simplest and most stable woven carbon architecture. Each warp tow passes over one weft tow and under the next in an alternating 1x1 pattern, creating the maximum number of interlace points of any weave. The result is a tight, symmetrical cloth with a uniform checkerboard-like surface that resists distortion during handling and layup.

The trade-off is drape: because every tow is locked at every crossing, plain weave is the least conformable of the common weaves. It is therefore specified where flatness, stability and a uniform surface matter more than the ability to wrap a compound curve. Typical uses include flat panels, sandwich skins, printed circuit and electronic core materials, tooling plies and structural reinforcement of flat substrates. For a comparison of weave architectures, see our carbon fiber fabric guide.

Fiber: GX400 wet-spun carbon fiber, tensile strength ≥4,000 MPa, tensile modulus ≥230 GPa, elongation ≥1.5%, density 1.77 +/- 0.03 g/cm3, epoxy-compatible sizing 1.0-1.6%. A representative plain-weave product, GXALT3K-P200G, is a 3K carbon plain weave at 200 +/- 10 g/m2 with 100 +/- 6 g/m2 in each of the 0 and 90 degree directions, and achieves post-infusion 0 degree tensile strength ≥500 MPa at modulus ≥40 GPa. Process details are covered in how carbon fiber cloth is made.

Key Advantages

  • Maximum dimensional stability. The tight 1x1 interlace locks every tow in place.

  • Uniform, balanced surface. Symmetrical in warp and weft, ideal for flat panels and skins.

  • Excellent handling. Resists distortion during cutting, transport and layup.

  • Fine 1K option. 90-140 g/m2 cloth for electronic core materials and thin laminates.

  • GX400 wet-spun fiber. ≥4,000 MPa with epoxy-compatible sizing for infusion and prepreg.

  • Widths to 2,200 mm. Wide panels with fewer joints.

  • CNAS-accredited batch testing. Every shipment with a test report.

Applications

  • Flat and sandwich panels. Skins for honeycomb and foam-core panels.

  • Electronics. 1K plain cloth as a thin, stable core or shielding substrate.

  • Marine and shipbuilding. Bulkheads, flat hull sections and reinforcement - see carbon fiber fabric for marine and shipbuilding.

  • Construction strengthening. Flat-surface structural reinforcement.

  • Tooling and moulds. Stable plies for composite tooling.

  • Automotive. Flat interior panels and structural inserts - see carbon fiber specs for automotive weave patterns.

Quality and Certifications

Plain weave cloth is produced under ISO 9001, AS9100D, IATF 16949, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification, with CNAS-accredited laboratory testing on every batch. Areal weight is controlled to tight tolerance (for example 200 +/- 10 g/m2), and individual tension meters per tow during heddle threading keep the weave uniform, with warp breakage limited to no more than 5 broken filaments per 100 m of fabric surface.

Standard packaging is sealed against moisture and shock; store at 10-35 C with relative humidity below 70%. Shelf life is 24 months, with re-testing available thereafter.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose plain weave over twill?

Choose plain weave when the part is flat or nearly flat and you need maximum stability and a uniform surface - panels, sandwich skins, tooling and electronics. Choose twill when the part has curvature or the surface will be visible.

Is plain weave stronger than twill?

The fiber governs strength, not the weave. However, the tight interlace of plain weave introduces more crimp, which can slightly reduce the translation of fiber properties into laminate properties in some loading cases. The practical difference is usually secondary to drape and appearance.

What is the thinnest plain weave cloth available?

1K plain weave at 90-140 g/m2, with a nominal thickness of 0.110-0.175 mm - the standard choice for thin laminates and electronic core materials.

Can plain weave be used in wind blades?

Yes, for flat or gently curved reinforcements and inter-layer flow media. For blade shells and spar caps, see carbon fiber fabrics for wind turbine blades.
